Pioneers of Data Science

Created for the Broad Institute in 2022, these four portraits weave a narrative of pioneers whose contributions paved the way for modern-day genomic analysis. Starting with Ada Lovelace publishing the first algorithm for execution by machine, Rosalind Franklin visualizing the structure of DNA in Photo 51, Dr. Katherine Johnson’s mathematical groundwork for computational methods, and ending with Margaret Hamilton, programming on-prem for NASA and coining the term “software engineer.” The field of Data Science would not exist without these four. These works are part of the Broad’s permanent collection.
